The association “Friends of Vauquois” has adopted 2 Doughboys who fell during the Meuse-Argonne offensive and are buried in the American military cemetery in Romagne-sous-Montfaucon. Traditionally, the adopted American soldiers are honored on the US Memorial Day during a private wreath laying ceremony ahead of the main event. This took place on May 24t, 2026. The honored Sammies are :
- Pte William E. Sloan, born in El Dorado, Kansas, was assigned as a mechanic in company I, 3rd battalion, 137th Infantry, 35th Division. He was killed on September 26th, the very first day of the offensive, while conducting a galant action that led him to be awarded with the Distinghised Service Cross. He is buried in plot C, row 28, grave 23.
- 1LT Joseph S. Ferguson, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was a platoon leader in company H, 2nd battalion, 110th Infantry, 28th Division. He was killed in action on 29 September near Varennes-en-Argonne and was also awarded with the DSC. He is buried in plot D, row 30, grave 25.
