Searching for artifacts on a battlefield is both ILLEGAL and DANGEROUS

Two Swiss citizens had been caught red-handed on the site of Vauquois while removing artifacts related to the battles of 1914-1918. They were recently sentenced to a substancial fine and ordered to pay damages to the association “Les Amis de Vauquois“.

This is an opportunity to remind our readers that the remains of the Great War are part of our archaeological heritage and that their management falls under the French State “Heritage Code”.

Due to the recurring arrests of individuals caught in the act throughout the Meuse battlefields, the Regional Directorate for Cultural Affairs has posted a notice at Vauquois parking lot reminding people of the legal provisions.

As the association “Friends of Vauquois” is in charge of the maintenance of the listed area, its chairman or any member designated by him, are authorized to file a complaint in the event of the discovery of illegal activities on the site.
